Belgrade Attractions - The Church of St. Alexander Nevsky is located on Dorcol at the place where earlier there was a church of more modest dimensions dedicated to the same saint. The old church was built in 1877 of ancient construction and was demolished in 1891 due to the urbanization of this part of Belgrade. The foundations for the new church were laid in the early 20th century in the presence of Crown Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic.
The temple was built according to the idea of architect Jelisaveta Načic, the first female architect to graduate in Serbia. The Church of St. Alexander Nevsky was completed in 1930. King Alexander Karadjordjevic donated to the Church the great icon of Saint Alexander Nevsky, the front door, three tetrapods and a large chandelier. The king also donated a large marble iconostasis to the Church. At the front door of the temple there are paintings "Kosovka Girl" and "Filip Visnjic". The temple houses memorial plaques to Holy Emperor Martyr Nikolai II Romanov and Russian volunteers, a memorial plaque to King Peter I, a memorial plaque killed in the bombing of World War II, and a memorial plaque to King Alexander I Karadjordjevic.
